Canola Double Haploid Lab Co-op Student/Intern – Bayer – Winnipeg, MB

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

We are seeking a highly motivated Canola Double Haploid Co-op Student/Intern for a four-month positions in Winnipeg (approximately January – April). This is an ideal opportunity for students interested in pursuing a career in biology, plant breeding, genetics, or microbiology to experience working with world class researchers in a leading agricultural company. The primary responsibilities of this role, Canola Double Haploid Co-op Student/Intern, are to:

  • The student will have the opportunity to participate in high throughput double haploid production and be involved in process improvement projects. As a member of the Double Haploid lab, you will have project work and ad hoc requests that require agility and often fast paced response to business needs
  • To ensure we are providing the best products for our customers, the student is required to work safely, diligently, and efficiently, and follow high standard operation procedures accurately to accomplish our breeding goals in a timely manner.

Key Tasks:

  • Execute laboratory operations to meet quality and timeline targets by assisting in all aspects of the production of canola doubled haploids using good laboratory practices and sterile technique. This includes but is not limited to collection and sizing of buds, microspore isolation, embryo culture, maintenance of embryos, making media (includes working with toxic chemicals), transferring embryos onto solid media, tissue sampling, analyzing plant material, and transplanting
  • Maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment
  • Assist in data collection, data analysis and database management
  • Actively participate in process improvement initiatives
  • Follow all Quality Management System (QMS) and Health Safety and Environment (HSE) procedures and promote implementation within the DH program
  • Maintain tidiness & orderliness within the workplace
  • Participate in task-related document creation and process review for job-related activities
  • Assist in other projects & performs other duties as required

There are multiple positions available. We will be hiring for 2 shifts of:

  • Monday, Wednesday and Friday (30 hours per week); or
  • Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday (40 hours per week)

  • Current and continuing enrollment in post-secondary education in a related area (biology, plant breeding, genetics, or microbiology)
  • Student must be immediately returning to school on completion of program
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear, precise, and actionable manner
  • Detail and results-orientated with the ability to work independently
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of double haploid production, including aseptic technique
  • Strong computer literacy, with experience using Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Sharepoint
  • Experience with experimental design and data analysis
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear, precise, and actionable manner
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary/multicultural research team
  • Flexible attitude and ability to learn new procedures
  • Willingness to work with Colchicine
  • Valid Driver’s license
